History of Khmerlang

🌱 Origins of Khmerlang.com

Khmerlang.com was founded in 2019—one year after the creation of the Khmer Coder Facebook community. This timing was no coincidence. The idea for Khmerlang emerged after a meeting with Bong Visal, the founder of that community. We were part of a small group called the Advanced Learning Group, where we gathered to discuss and tackle real-world problems using technology.

During one of these meetings, I became particularly interested in the challenge of helping Khmer people who often used Latin (English-based) text to write Khmer in daily communication. Motivated by this, I began developing a mobile keyboard app that could help solve this issue. The app was released as an open-source project to encourage community collaboration.

While building that app, I realized that there was no centralized platform for resources related to Khmer Natural Language Processing (NLP). That gap inspired the creation of Khmerlang.com—a dedicated hub to support Khmer language technology.

The journey of Khmerlang began with a simple but powerful mission:

To empower the Khmer language with AI and digital tools.

What started as a side project has since evolved into a community-driven initiative:

🧱 Key Milestones

1. Collecting and Sharing Khmer Data

The first challenge was data scarcity. The team focused on:

  • Crawling and cleaning Khmer text from public sources
  • Annotating data for training AI models
  • Creating the foundation for Khmer datasets in NLP and speech processing

2. Launch of Khmerlang.com

Khmerlang.com officially launched as a hub for:
