From Streamer to Founder: The Untold Story of How I Built Stream Neon

My name is Tep Sothea, a full-stack developer and content creator at Kley Kley ខ្លីតែខ្លឹម. I want to share the real story of why I built Stream Neon, what it does, and the challenges I’ve faced. Image

The Day Facebook Took My Stars

Before Stream Neon, I was a streamer like many of you. I earned through Facebook Stars. One day, I made around $15 — it felt so good because it came from my supporters.

Then, months later, Facebook suddenly reset my Stars to 0. Just like that, all my effort disappeared. Even if they hadn’t reset it, I would still have needed a $100 minimum to withdraw.

That moment made me think: Why should we depend on a system that can erase our work anytime?

That’s when I decided to build Stream Neon — where every donation goes directly into a streamer’s ABA account, no middleman, no cut, no waiting.

What Stream Neon Offers

I didn’t just want to build a donation button. I wanted to make streaming more interactive and fun:

Donation Goals → keep the hype going.

Image

Stream Alert Donation → pop-ups on stream through OBS.

Image

Leaderboards → show off your top fans.

Image

Real-Time Dashboard → see your earnings instantly.

When viewers see their name on the stream, they feel part of the show. When streamers see their earnings right away, it motivates them to keep going.

The First Subscription

After I launched Stream Neon, I kept waiting for someone to subscribe. Days passed. I kept checking. Then finally…

Image

The first subscription came in. That single moment made me so happy. It gave me confidence to keep improving.

Free Trial Abuse

At the start, I offered a 7-day free trial. My idea was: let streamers try before they pay. But then some users started abusing it — creating new accounts over and over.

Image

Since web apps can’t fully lock trials like desktop software, the only solution was to disable free trials. Not what I wanted, but necessary.

Surviving a DDoS Attack

In August 2025 (8th–12th), Stream Neon was hit by a DDoS attack. And it wasn’t from some pro hacker group — it was from a kid in Cambodia.

Image

Thanks to Cloudflare and my small server (just 512MB RAM, 1 CPU, 10GB storage), Stream Neon survived. That week taught me resilience: even small setups can hold if you prepare.

The Hard Truth About Building

Building a product is not easy. Most people only see the platform when it works. They don’t see:

  • 25+ sql tables.
  • Bugs at 2AM.
  • Users trying to break the system.
  • Attacks coming when you least expect.

Image

Sometimes it feels like more people try to tear down what you build than support it. But I keep going, because I know why I started.

Looking Ahead

Today, Stream Neon is trusted by streamers in Cambodia like Selena Gaming, Ream Angkor, Mano Gaming, Ic3_fr0Gz , KaKa42, NaiKer Gaming, and more.

It costs just $5/month for full access to all features, giving streamers the tools they need to grow their audience and earn fairly.

This is only the beginning. I’ll keep building, keep improving, and keep making sure Cambodian streamers have a platform they can rely on.
